I came across the music of Kago while traveling through the Baltics last spring. They were on an indie compilation I bought from a thrift store in Tallinn. The music is dark and angelic – and the track they produced for Two Blue Wolves elegantly captures the color and spirit of the story.
The song was produced by Lauri Sommer, the musical mastermind behind Kago, at his grandfather’s farmhouse in the south of Estonia. What I love most about the track is the far off quality of the melody. The recording evokes a sense of distance in a way I haven’t heard before.

Sparrow Hall, Mohammed Naseehu Ali & David Anthony on life after Bennington.
Here I am gesturing wildly, pen in hand, while speaking to students at Bennington College. I have no idea what I was talking about, but I look very convincing. That’s my friend Mohammed Naseehu Ali to my left, author of The Prophet of Zongo Street, and my friend David Anthony to my right, founder of Metropolis DVD (which has authored every amazing DVD known to man – from the Beastie Boys to Moby). If you want to see something truly amazing, rent the Slipknot DVD that his team produced called Disasterpieces. There’s a drummer who actually rides his drum set and at one point the DJ surfs off into the crowd, never to return.

I was shooting the music video for “Stranger In the Strangest Land” at The Culture Project and had to miss the stellastarr secret show at Luna Lounge – recently resurrected in Brooklyn. Now if only they’d repoen Baby Jupiter. I think the last show I saw there was when The Strokes opened for stella. Hmm… how long ago was that?
I shot this one of Shawn on Lawrence’s camera backstage at the Bowery show.

“Missing You Again”
lyrics by Alex Parker
© 2007
Life goes on, never back again
I used to drink and dial, sometimes I was strange,
Tried to make you laugh, I guess those were the days
Pictures in a box, memories are fading
Like needles into skin
I’m missing you again.
Just like wolves in the museum
You were so eloquent when you spoke in French
filter less cigarettes, red wine and sex.
You and I in France Bain Douche where we danced
Now I’m sitting here with a gun in my hand and I’m…
Missing you again x4
You said my heart was broke a long, long time ago
Like needles into skin, I’m missing you again

You could see the city from a long way off. It rose out of the cornfields like a hill of mirrors.

Nathan’s mother invited us for an early dinner at the house in Richmond, a beautiful suburb outside of London. I shot this one of Nathan proudly sporting the bottle of wine we’d picked up in town. That night, his mother told the story of how she’d bumped into Pete Townshend at the antique shop. “Hello, Pete.” “Hello, Annie.” I loved the idea of this rock god puttering around the little porcelain displays.

We shot Wythe in the meatpacking district. Ganesvoort, Jane Street. Big thanks to The Viceroy for letting us shoot guerilla style at the table. And for sending over that second basket of muffins.
