I met with Julie (aka Hesta Prynn) yesterday at the Corner Shop Café to hear about the upcoming Northern State album, which is set to drop in late August. Check out their myspace to hear a few of the new tracks, including my favorite “Away Away.”
Julie had some nice things to say about Two Blue Wolves, and we talked about the possibility of featuring a Northern State song on the upcoming collection, You Looked Good On the Dancefloor & Other Stories.

I was in Massachusetts this weekend, so I stopped to visit the Sedgwick Pie. Edie isn’t buried there, but most of the other relatives are. The Pie is a circular plot with the eldest relative, Judge Theodore Sedgwick at it’s center. Judge Sedgwick ran with the boys who signed the Declaration of Independence. The other members of the family encircle the judge in order of generation, feet in, head out, like the rings of a tree trunk. In Edie: An American Biography, John P. Marquand, Jr. writes “legend is that on Judgment Day when they arise and face the Judge, they will have to see no one but Sedgwicks.”
I took this video of the Pie to show what the Judge might see if he rose from the dead and took a look around him.
It’s that season again. The one where I find myself traveling to the far ends of the Earth to attend the official hook-ups of my once-single friends. I was up in NH on Saturday for Lizzie’s wedding, which actually turned out to be a Bennington class reunion of sorts – complete with afterparty in David’s room – appropriately located over the dancefloor.

Shawn Stellastarr played me a demo of the song he and Kevin are producing for Two Blue Wolves. Kevin recorded it on an old school tape deck he likes to use in place of Pro Tools. Shawn swears it actually sounds better. Maybe Pro Tools should look into a filter called “busted tape deck” to produce the same authentic effect. We actually had to listen to it in his Toyota, since neither of us own a tape deck.
The song, which has yet to receive a title, has a real Dylan vibe to it – timeless and folksy, which is interesting when you hear it channeled through Shawn’s vocals. They’re in the process of recording a 4-track, and plan to to work with Mod the Alien (Elefant’s producer) on the final master.
Credit where credit is due – I sent Zach a message over his myspace the other day. Here are a few excerpts from that email:
Garden State had a major influence on the development of Two Blue Wolves. It was inspiring to see someone my age bringing so many pieces together to create this really memorable experience…
I just wanted to say thank you for being an inspiring force behind the work and for taking the time as an artist to create something that so many of us truly enjoyed.
I’d be happy to keep you in the loop as things develop, and I’d be more than thrilled if you’d like to be a part of the Two Blue Wolves experience in some way… Any feedback you’d like to give, please send it my way…
The Hourly Radio has just signed on to produce a track for Two Blue Wolves. I’ve been catching up with Ryan over email. The band just returned from their London tour and he says they’re ready to hit the studio.
I’m a huge fan of THR. I first saw them play at the Bowery Ballroom with stellastarr*. Their live performance lit up the crowd. And the press were soon to follow. The band was named Billboard’s #1 Critic’s Choice for 2006 and “Band of the Day” by Spin Magazine. If you haven’t picked up their album yet, then you better get on it right away. History Will Never Hold Me makes me want to go out and cause trouble – in a very sophisticated British way. Listen to “Closer” or “Deaf Ears” and you’ll see what I mean.
