Charcoal with Water - Antoni Ooto

My dad just sent me some of the images for his upcoming presentation in Rochester – a time-lapse documentation of his process. Here, he’s working with charcoal directly applied to a wall that’s been saturated with water. The video depicts the changes that occur as the marks are effected by the water and gravity over time.

Remembering Tony

Tony Wilson

It’s been over a week since Tony Wilson passed away from kidney cancer, and I’ve been wanting to write a post, but haven’t really known what to say. I had always hoped I’d meet Tony on one of my trips to Manchester. I tried tracking him down through a couple contacts I have out there, but they had the same response each time – “good luck.” He was a busy guy, right up to the end – from his involvement in local politics, to his ongoing commitment to supporting new music, most recently with Manchester’s world-recognized In the City Festival. Of course, what Tony will always be remembered for is his legendary Factory Records, which he founded in the late 70’s to promote what was then an underground movement in music, and what would later come to be known as New Wave. Leading the way were Joy Division, later to become New Order after the death of singer Ian Curtis, The Happy Mondays and Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark. Together, with wunderkind designer Peter Saville, they formed a signature look and sound – from the records they produced to the clubs they designed and promoted – that would become the foundation of a cultural community that would span the world.

I owe a lot to Tony Wilson – from the painful mix tapes I made as a teenager, to the vision I have for my own life’s work. His spirit of innovation and his lust for life are inextricably tied to the choices I make and the goals I set for myself.

Tony, I never got to tell you this, but Hydrogen and Two Blue Wolves, this collaboration we’re doing, it was inspired by you and the old Factory crew. You would be proud if you saw what these guys were doing. So much talent, and everyone suppporting one another. It’s a real family. Thank you for showing us how it’s done.

crowd at 11th St Bar

Thursday night’s reading was an incredible event with a great turnout. A big thanks to Wythe, Carlos, Paul, Lee and Oliver for sharing their work… Fury Young, Chris Tilden and Coco Young for capturing everything on film… Kastoory Kazi for helping us coordinate… and Bennington College for publicizing the event.

And most importantly, a shoutout to everyone who came and listened, and for all your positive feedback. You guys made the night what it was. Thank you for your support.

We’ll be uploading segments of footage from that night in the next month or so, so stay tuned.
