January’s playlist features one of the most beautiful (and heart wrenching) songs I’ve heard in a long time – “Transistor Radio” by the Minneapolis septet, Cloud Cult. To hear it: go to their myspace and click on the album cover “Advice for…” in the music player. It’s track 8.

On a cheerier note – check out the video for Dance Wiv Me featuring Dizzee Rascal, Calvin Harris and Chrome. I can not stop playing this track.

And lets not forget Friendly Fires who absolutely killed it at this year’s CMJ Fader Fort.

Friendly Fires / Jump In the Pool / Live at Later…

Master Shortie & A Crowd Electric

Some video footage of the three of us in studio.

Master Shortie in studio with A Crowd Electric. Video by Steve Whiteley, 103.6fm London.

We’re working with Shortie on a track called “Clothes Off.” It’s a straight up party jam that’ll make Prince jealous. A Crowd Electric wrote and produced the track, and Shortie added some of his own parts – which you can hear him coming up with on the fly.

Master Shortie is like the 80s electro version of Dizzee Rascal. He has a range of influences and is a powder keg of excitement and creativity. Check out his music at www.mastershortie.com and myspace at www.myspace.com/mastershortie.

Circus (A Crowd Electric Remix) / Britney Spears

Circus (A Crowd Electric Remix) / Britney Spears

I realize I’ve been off the grid for a bit. The reason? Well, there are plenty of reasons. And all of them good. One of which is the new Britney remix that me and David have been working on for far too long. I never would have expected to find myself opposite Britney Spears, but then how could I say no? :) We’ve been blown away with how quickly the track has taken off, with write ups on ArjanWrites, TapeRecorder and various other blogs. And of course we owe a big thanks to Raj at EQ, who continues to be one of our biggest fans. You can download Circus (A Crowd Electric Remix) at www.acrowdelectric.com. Let us know what you think!

So yeah, lots of things in the works for ACE – another reason why you haven’t been seeing me for a bit. We just came out of the studio with London hip hop artist Master Shortie and spoken word MC Schizo. David and I wrote and produced a track for Shortie and had a blast hanging out with him in Brooklyn while he was here.

Another singer we discovered along the way is Biet Yelena Simkin of World War. David overheard her singing a bizarre and beautiful harmony to Madonna’s “Lucky Star” at Arlo & Esme’s and immediately fell in love. Get to know her incredible voice on the track “Speedball” on World War’s myspace.

Song / Dead Lions

I heard about this game. One of my British friends told me about it. When he was little, he used to go over to his friend’s house, and they would spend the day running around, terrorizing the place. When it got to be too much, the mother would call out “Dead lions” and the boys would fall instantly to the floor. There they’d remain, as still as statues, until one would eventually flinch or sneeze or laugh – breaking the spell and losing the game.

That was the whole competition. Who could pretend they were dead the longest? I loved the simplicity, and how the mother used it as a break from the noise. But there was something incredibly dark about it as well – the nature of the spell that she cast upon the children. I thought about the stillness in the room, and the mother standing in the center of it with the lions at her feet. And I wondered where her mind would be just then.

Dead Lions
Lyrics by Sparrow Hall

Dead lions lay across the floor
The clock chimes above the door
It counts the days and nothing more
Dead lions lay across the floor

Windows lose their glazing til
Nothing’s left tween me and the sky
The birds claw and whip the sill
To show me how to fly

I can’t deny my baby
I can’t deny my lady
I can’t deny that lately
I’ve been going a little crazy
It’s hard to think that maybe
I need someone to save me
This really shouldn’t faze me
But the line is growing hazy

The room is carved by shadows
As the sun shows its face
Black lines look like prison bars
Spreading across the place

Dead lions lay across the floor
A game is played without a score
Just a game and nothing more
Dead lions lay across the floor

Don’t you move
Don’t you move
Don’t you move
Don’t you move
