This Hotel Makes Me Feel Like I’m in an 80s Video

Filed under: Uncategorized — Sparrow @ 11:37 am

Hotel Gansevoort

I’m in New York celebrating the launch of Two Blue Wolves, which also coincides with a very special homecoming. My friend Dr. Todd Knudson is back after serving in Iraq for 2 years as an Army Captain responsible for the well-being of about 9,000 soldiers. This wouldn’t seem absurd if we hadn’t graduated together from the same art school where we spent the majority of our time dancing to the Eurythmics and playing Ultimate Croquet.

As a way to kick off his return to civilization, we chose the furthest thing from a dusty army tent – The Hotel Gansevoort. In a nutshell, the Gansevoort makes you feel like you’re rendezvousing with a member of Bananarama while in town on a press junket.

Everything in the Gansevoort is lit at 15%, including the closets. When I walked into my room it was like stepping onto the set of…

There is no way to calculate how many Europeans are staying in this hotel, but I’m almost positive Todd and I are the only Americans.

Sparrow Hall & David Crabb (A Crowd Electric) – DJs for SUPERFRAICHE on Nov 12

Filed under: Uncategorized — Sparrow @ 4:45 pm

SUPERFRAICHE Pop Night featuring A Crowd Electric / Hosted by ArjanWrites

Arjan of ArjanWrites asked David and I to DJ next month’s SUPERFRAICHE, which we’re psyched about. We’re going to be playing our new track “The Waiter” off of the Two Blue Wolves Soundtrack, previewing our new single “Reckless” and demoing some of the other tracks we’ve been working on.

Arjan has been a really good friend to A Crowd Electric, posting features for both of the remixes we did for Madonna and Britney and just having nice things to say about our music in general.

If you want to know who’s who and what’s what in the world of today’s electro pop, visit ArjanWrites, and be sure to download the remixes that he posts from time to time. (I have a whole playlist dedicated to them on my iPod.). And be sure to come out and get your dance on at SUPERFRAICHE at Santos on November 12th!

I deliberated over whether or not I should even post a playlist this month, since it’s coming so late. The Two Blue Wolves launch has been taking up so much of my attention that I could barely recall what I’d been listening to. But then I took a look at my iPod and remembered one of the main reasons why I wanted to make this post.

This month, I made an incredible discovery – Crooked Fingers – whom you may know as Eric Bachmann from the Archers of Loaf. Leaving the driving fuzzed-out guitars of AoL’s garage rock, Bachmann formed Crooked Fingers to explore his singer-songwriter side. On first listen, Crooked Fingers might be described as the punk rock nephew of Bruce Springsteen, but if you explore the band’s catalogue, you’ll hear something much more sombre, deeper, wiser.

Here is a man who has been creating music for ages, and has learned so many things, has tweaked his craft and found an over-riding narrative to his work. In that way, the albums flow like chapters of a life. If you want to start from the beginning, listen to some of the Archers of Loaf’s early albums, and then see how his music shifts towards the end with songs like “Fashion Bleeds” and “White Trash Heroes,” and how those tracks dovetail into the sound of Crooked Fingers.

I would like to tell you exactly what songs to focus on as you introduce yourself to Crooked Fingers, but all I can say is I went a bit buy-crazy when I found his work. Here’s what I mean:

I’ve been listening to this playlist on shuffle for the past three weeks, and the more I listen, the more I discover, and the more I like what this artist has to say.
