I deliberated over whether or not I should even post a playlist this month, since it’s coming so late. The Two Blue Wolves launch has been taking up so much of my attention that I could barely recall what I’d been listening to. But then I took a look at my iPod and remembered one of the main reasons why I wanted to make this post.
This month, I made an incredible discovery – Crooked Fingers – whom you may know as Eric Bachmann from the Archers of Loaf. Leaving the driving fuzzed-out guitars of AoL’s garage rock, Bachmann formed Crooked Fingers to explore his singer-songwriter side. On first listen, Crooked Fingers might be described as the punk rock nephew of Bruce Springsteen, but if you explore the band’s catalogue, you’ll hear something much more sombre, deeper, wiser.
Here is a man who has been creating music for ages, and has learned so many things, has tweaked his craft and found an over-riding narrative to his work. In that way, the albums flow like chapters of a life. If you want to start from the beginning, listen to some of the Archers of Loaf’s early albums, and then see how his music shifts towards the end with songs like “Fashion Bleeds” and “White Trash Heroes,” and how those tracks dovetail into the sound of Crooked Fingers.

I would like to tell you exactly what songs to focus on as you introduce yourself to Crooked Fingers, but all I can say is I went a bit buy-crazy when I found his work. Here’s what I mean:

Sparrow Hall / Crooked Fingers Playlist
I’ve been listening to this playlist on shuffle for the past three weeks, and the more I listen, the more I discover, and the more I like what this artist has to say.
