Kanye West’s “Runaway” and the Artist as Audience

“Runaway” – A still from the film by Kanye West

There is a point where I stop and realize I can no longer see where we are, no longer hear a singular voice, where all the color and noise of our daily lives swirl together into the body of a luminescent pearl, and I need to look through someone else’s eyes to see the patterns, the shapes, the players within.

The artist helps me see where I am for a moment. But only to discover that this world is his and not mine, that we are each a single-member audience to life’s great show. And that I, like him, am alone and watching and navigating and trying to decode the colors of the pearl.
